Summary of journal Week 2

Interaction takes place in a spatial context and in many ways is influenced or shaped by this context. Interaction also discursively creates space. In this article, authors aim to analyze the recreation of interactional architecture and spatial positioning in one specific virtual world, i.e. Second Life, in order to explore the ways in which the interactants deal with the differences between physical life and virtual life.

In this case of study, the authors use the virtual world of Second Life, a computer-driven, simulated three-dimensional virtual world inhabited by graphic avatars. They use two different sets of data. In Section One, they rely on data compiled by Jucker and Berger as part of an explorative study of Second Life in 2009 and 2010. In that study, they focus on events that are strongly framed, i.e. that were announced with an event note, that were scheduled with a beginning and ending time and that were moderated by one resident. They collect data on three event types: lectures, discussion events and parties. They attend three instances of each event type, recorde the event with a screen recording programme, make screenshots and copy the log files from open chat as well as from IM chats (sometimes Berger is asked questions concerning the research) into a Word document. In Section Two, they rely on data from a follow-up study conducted by Berger. Berger focused on how text-based discussion groups are organized in Second Life and how the three-dimensional virtual setting is employed for that purpose.

Their investigation has revealed the limits of the understanding of the interdependence between space and interaction. It has become apparent how architectural space in physical life provides affordances for specific types of communication and how spaces can be created communicatively through interaction. Space in virtual life, such as Second Life, imitates many aspects of space in physical life, but some of the affordances of physical life which enable specific forms of communication turn into flags in virtual contexts. They are not needed to enable communication but they serve as indicators or frames of the specific type of communication that is taking place.

Second Life Journal Week 2

Today is an exciting day since I enter in Home of  Gridberts. It is a fun new shooting game. I can play alone or compete with my friends and make points by shooting the GridBerts or by collecting diamonds.

I obtain a gun and I can use it to shoot GridBerts.

Look! I find a diamond and I am going to pick it up to get points.

Then, I am going to level 2 to begin my shooting. The Gridberts are always running around so I have problems to aim at them. In addition, every Gridbert has 100% life and I need to shoot them more than 3 times in order to kill them.

Come on guys! My team needs you to complete this mission!

Week 2: Academic Blog

This article is mainly studied teaching language in the second life, what impact will be brought to students and society. There are two aspects studied in this article. The first aspect is during the two task-based language teaching, is there any benefits or challenges will be met. Another task is how to reflect the development and implementation process of the teaching consciousness in in-world change.

The qualitative analysis was used by this article. Participants included four teachers from Australia and Taiwan, and 144 CFL undergraduate students from Australian university. This study focus on the Chinese language teaching by four different teachers—the teaching are mainly completed by Chinese teachers, and Australian teachers to give some support. The whole teaching purpose is to provide students with more opportunities to practice Chinese. In Second Life, teachers built 3 different activity units which are “Pair the Friends”, “Family Day” and “Clues in the Maze” to make students can practice Chinese according to their requirement. Teachers also can adjust the teaching units by received students’ feedback.

Through the research above, there are 4 conclusions showed in this article. The first one is Second Life could provides opportunities to set a clear goal. Secondly, it could ensure that student will be the center and authentic learning methods. Thirdly, it makes the opportunities for language input, production, and feedback varied. The last one is this provide a comfortable learning environment.

With more educational institutions would like to use the network platform to carry out teaching, how to reduce the common technical problems has become the primary challenge. And this requires educators and researchers work harder in order to make this kind of network platform better to adapt the educational purpose and more benefits to language learner.

Week 2: Second Life Journal

 Hello, everyone

This week, I went to Tiger Valley. The scenery there is so beautiful. When I walk around, I found an interesting thing is there are many stone doors which could take you to the different places. Some doors would have a crystal bridge, but some of them would have nothing behind them. I spend a lot of time to find out where the door will be reach to.

When to walk around, you also can see some words on the stone, wall, behind the falls, even on the trees. These words would not seen very clearly, but with you came near they will show more clearly. During I try the different door and to back to the door, I found a lot of words.

When I Pass one of the door, I found there is a labyrinth and one of  a road connect to a beautiful hall. I walk around and suddnely I found that I was blocked into a cage! I can't get out! I don't know who did that and how did that because I could not have any interaction with the cage! So I go back home and came in this valley again.

I went to this hall again and found a new stone door.  I dropped into a box world after pass that door. I walk around and found nothing in that room also nothing behind the door, but there a special one. So I pass the special door.

After I reach to the new world, I was really shocked that this space is so so so beautiful! It is a magic space that everything in there could bring you a totally different feeling.

There also another thing would be worth to mentioned is when I walk around, I fall down from this space to dark box world. During the course, I was shocked again. The beautiful of this small world could not express by any language and words. So I won't put any pictures about this, just expreience it!

Ps. There still have one thing need to be mentioned that flying is prohibited in this valley.

Second Life Journal Week 1

Today, I am so excited since I am going to visit one of my favorite places - park.
It named Delacruz Park which is a relaxing island where people can stay connected to nature and animals. When I enter it, teleport map leaps to the eyes. We can enjoy fantastic rides including a rollercoaster, bumper cars, bungee jumping and so on in this park.
The first recreation facility that I choose is ferry wheel, from which I can enjoy panoramic view of the beautiful scenery when I am on the top of it.
It is amazing! Roller coaster is not jus a kind of entertainment, it gives me courage to face the challenge that I never meet and instructs me to be brave in my real life.
When I am walking around, a visitor near me ask for help. He akes me how to quit the game and I tell the approach to him. Allow us do through the bit petty thing, a good character is in the establishment in our real life.

What a memorable day! Second life not just a second life, it indeed shows the way how can we do better in our daily life to us.

This is third one and it is also my favorite suit.

This mall is so broad that I spend whole day to walk around. It's really a interesting game.

Cheers
